Prof. Francesco Chiarelli, MD, PhD Francesco Chiarelli is Professor of Paediatrics at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Chieti in Chieti, Italy. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Siena in Italy. His research interests include the molecular and cellular biology of diabetic angiopathy; insulin resistance in children; early detection of diabetic microangiopathy in children; obesity and type 2 diabetes in children. He has written extensively and been published in leading scientific journals such as The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Clinical Endocrinology, Circulation, ATVB. He is on the Editorial Board of Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, Pediatric Diabetes, Hormone Research, Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolism, The Italian Journal of Pediatrics. He has also been an invited lecturer throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, North and South America. Professor Chiarelli holds membership in several professional organizations, including the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the Italian Society of Paediatrics (SIP), the Italian Society for Paediatric Research (ISPR) and the Italian Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ISPED). He has been Secretary General of ESPE (2004-2011) and ESPE President in 2009 and 2013. He is President of the ISPR (2012-2015).
Prof Hiroaki Masuzaki, MD, PhD Okinawa islands, the extreme south of JAPAN, have long been a world-famous area of longevity. Recently, however, an expeditious expansion of lifestyle-related metabolic and cardiovascular diseases here has been closely linked with a substantial drop in life span (Okinawa Crisis). Based on such an emergent and critical situation, we now endeavor to elucidate the underlying multi-factorial mechanisms. My specialties in academic / clinical fields are (1) molecular pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome, (2) hypothalamic control of energy balance and food preference, (3) molecular nutrition and molecular food science, (4) drug discoveries for obesity-diabetes syndrome (e.g. selective inhibitors for 11beta-HSD1) and (5) molecular mechanisms of adipocyte dysfunction in visceral fat obesity. In my talk, I plan to introduce the recent research progress in appetite control, ectopic lipid deposition and therapeutic insight into diabetes-obesity syndrome.
Sudigdo Sastroasmoro, MD, PhD Sudigdo is a Professor in Pediatrics, Medical School University of Indonesia (UI), and Consultant in Pediatric Cardiology. He completed his undergraduate education in UI in 1971, and had his pediatric cardiology training in Royal Children Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, in 1985-1987. He earned PhD degree in UI in 1998 and inaugurated as Professor in Pediatrics in 2000. He wrote and edited several books on pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, research methods, and evidence-based medicine. He was also the Chief Editor of Paediatrica Indonesiana for 17 years (1994-2011). He practices and teaches pediatric cardiology for undergraduate and post-graduate students, but in the last 10 years he dedicated most of his time for teaching research methods and evidence-based medicine especially for residents and doctorate candidates. Currently he is the Chairman of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, Medical School, University of Indonesia - Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, and also the Chairman of Indonesian Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Network. He also serves as Deputy Chair of Medical Staff, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Member of the Consortium of Health Care, Ministry of Health, RI responsible for the development of National Clinical Guidelines, and Member of Advisory Committee on Health Research / WHO - SEARO.
